Virginia Museum of Natural History

Nearly all of the fossil insects housed at the Virginia Museum of Natural History (VMNH) are from the Solite Quarry, a Newark Supergroup Late Triassic site in the Danville Rift Basin. Most of the material was collected under the direction of Dr. Nicholas Fraser and Dr. Paul Olsen beginning in the late 1980’s. It includes approximately 100 drawers of catalogued material and an additional 10-20 drawers of unprocessed material from the most productive beds at the site. Excavations at the Solite Quarry are continuing as is the processing of uncurated material. The VMNH will digitize just over 8,000 specimens and georeference 273 localities.
